Unbound volume [29 sheets], consisting of answers of British Counsul to queries by the Crown re Charleston, S.C.; lists imports and exports, 1829-1831, and other matters related to commerce. Consul reports no documented cases of smuggling from South Carolina; details shipping and tonnage employed in foreign trade; lists steamboats to Augusta, Ga., and Georgetown and Cheraw, S.C.; describes harbor and the construction of wharves; and makes observations re banks, artisans, immigration (1827-1831), bankruptcy laws, fortunes and retirement of merchants, and comments on trade policies and relations.
